Bark and Seeds

Hillside Herbals offers healing alternatives and complimentary herbals for everyday needs or pleasure. I only use certified-organic herbs, herbs grown organically here at Hillside Herbals, or herbs that I have wild-crafted from our New England area.

Plants are powerful. I craft my teas and tinctures with deep respect and understanding of the power of herbs. Every ingredient in my teas and tinctures has been mindfully selected. You will not find fillers, flavors, binders, or other unrecognizable chemicals but only what you need: the healing whole herbs that are already here for us.

About Us

Hillside Herbals is a family-run business that is managed, primarily by myself, Rachel, and supported by my grown children, who, upon a visit, will offer up an awe-inspired new idea without a second thought. Their ideas and creations are often the most popular items at the Farmer's Market!  Isn't intuition amazing?!

My Story

I live on a southerly sloping hillside in Jefferson, a small town bordering Holden in Central Massachusetts.  I have fallen in love with the possibilities for local, organic, and medicinal sustainability through the growing, wild-crafting, and providing of herbs and plants for our community.  For me, the journey toward crafting and formulating came from my long-standing love and interest in Botany, coupled with my interests in women's health, family well-being, and birth.

I took conventional education routes earning my Masters in Botany and Masters in Nursing with a specialty in Nurse-Midwifery. I've come full circle by incorporating these loves into a Clinical Herbalist's service of education, herbs, and herbal formulations.

I came from the natural birth movement, the natural foods, holistic healing, and natural lifestyle movements. Perhaps, one could say, I was one of those "Hippy Moms".  However, over the years, I practiced midwifery in conventional medical settings and got a birds-eye view of how our current medicalization of health is more often damaging than healing. Herbalists all agree that traditional medicine fares best when functioning as "emergency medicine"; heart attacks, accidents, broken bones, massive bleeding, any medical crisis, and emergency medicine has its well-respected place.

I became convinced that true healing and health, which we all seem to need, come from the healing plants already here for all aspects of our lives.  It doesn't matter if you are a mature adult, a birthing mom, a budding teenager, or a young child; we need to enter into the realm of our plant world--the one in which we live, here and now, in order to find balance, health, and healing.
